Buccaneers Bolster Depth by Signing Former Los Angeles Chargers Versatile Offensive Lineman

The Buccaneers have brought in a durable and experienced offensive lineman who will provide the team with some much-needed depth and versatility.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed veteran offensive lineman, Matt Feiler, to a 1-year contract.

The signing was first announced on Thursday afternoon by Peter Schrager of the NFL Network and Fox Sports

Feiler has good experience starting at both tackle and guard in the NFL. He was most recently utilized as a left guard for the Los Angeles Chargers, where he started every game in each of the past two seasons.

Undrafted in 2014 coming out of Bloomsburg University, the 6'6", 330-pound Feiler was initially signed by the Houston Texans, but he was unable to work his way up beyond the practice squad.

Where Feiler first found success in the NFL was in Pittsburgh. It was there that he signed a 1-year contract in 2017, and though initially quite low on the Steelers' depth chart, Feiler grinded his way over several seasons into being named the team's starting right tackle by Week 8 of 2018.

Feiler has started 73 NFL games over the course of his career, and along with his durability, his trademark is clearly his ability to play multiple positions. Which, for the Buccaneers, has a lot of value.

Tampa Bay is currently mulling the idea of moving superstar right tackle, Tristan Wirfs, from the right side over to the left. And after parting ways with longtime starter, Donovan Smith, trading right guard, Shaq Mason, and losing swing tackle Josh Wells in free agency this offseason, there's no question that the Buccaneers are in dire need of experience and versatility along their offensive line.

Which is exactly what Matt Feiler can provide.

How Feiler will be utilized by the Bucs next season is yet to be determined. It would be shocking if Bucs' GM, Jason Licht, didn't choose to use an early-round pick on a quality offensive tackle prospect in this year's draft. Based on Feiler's resume, it's fair to assume that he will, at the very least, have the opportunity to compete for a starting position with the Bucs — whether that be at guard or tackle.

One thing is for sure. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need bodies along their offensive line. And the good thing about this signing? Matt Feiler is much more than just a body.

He's a veteran offensive lineman with quality experience starting at different positions along the offensive line. His experience, durability, and size will be a welcome addition to an offensive line group that is still trying to find its identity.
