Buccaneers' Mike Evans Wants Starting Quarterback Answer 'Soon'

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers Mike Evans wants a resolution to the starting quarterback debacle soon.
In this story:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers still have no resolve to the question mark that is the starting quarterback. Early on, Baker Mayfield seemed to be the answer. That line became blurred and the team hasn't announced any resolution since.

For a wide receiver, understanding who will be under center and making plays is important, and not having that answer might make things difficult with the regular season looming.

Mike Evans, who is headed into his tenth season with the Buccaneers, is ready for the answer.

“We want to know who the starter’s going to be, you know, soon,” Evans said after practice Wednesday. “So we can just keep working and [the starting QB] can take control of the offense.”

For the offense to truly prepare for the regular season, having an understanding of who will be starting under center is huge. That answer could come soon, too. The Buccaneers play their second preseason game this weekend.

Where things stand now, it appears as if Mayfield will be the starting quarterback in Week 1 of the regular season. He had the better game between himself and Kyle Trask in the first preseason matchup.

If Mayfield has a strong outing in the second preseason game, he could make his claim as the starting quarterback, paving the way for the team to make the announcement as soon as possible.

It's completely fair for the team to drag out this process. It's their job to ensure they do their due diligence and give both quarterbacks a chance to earn the starting job, but Mayfield seems to have been the favorite all along, and he's got a resume that earns him the right to give the team the best chance to win early on.

Evidently, Evans might understand that the Buccaneers could be delaying the inevitable, but at this point, nobody truly knows and the team will have to continue preparing for the season and operating that way.
