Former Browns Teammate Defends Buccaneers Quarterback Baker Mayfield

Former teammate of Baker Mayfield, Austin Hooper, addressed narratives surrounding the veteran quarterback.

Since leaving the team that drafted him number one overall in the 2018 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns, Baker Mayfield has received heaps of scrutiny from those around the NFL as well as in the media.

In a recent appearance on Jim Rome's show, former Cleveland Browns' tight end and Mayfield's teammate, Austin Hooper sat down to discuss the misconceptions that have followed Baker following his departure from the Browns back in 2021.

“Everything that came out about him, it was nothing from guys on the team,” Hooper said. “Once decisions were made, certain people within a building had to justify their decision. That’s all I’m gonna say about that… He’s never had any issues with anyone in the locker room. He’s a great teammate, he’s a good dude, always checks in on everyone.”

Clearly, the narrative floating about that Baker was not a great teammate following his time with the Browns was false and misguided thanks to those who have more power in the higher brass. Hooper went on to disclose his happiness that Mayfield is getting another shot and knows that he will give his all now that an opportunity has presented itself.

“You’ve seen him. He gets his opportunities, especially with the Rams coming on short notice, getting his opportunity going and succeeding,” Hooper said. “So I mean, I was super happy for him.”

Mayfield hasn't been guaranteed the starting job in Tampa Bay and he and the coaching staff seemingly have had that conversation that he will indeed be competing with former second-round pick, Kyle Trask for the starting gig. Either way, Baker will bring a presence that will hopefully boost morale throughout the Buccaneers' roster and locker room - whether he starts or not.
