Seattle Seahawks Cut Former Buccaneers Running Back, Super Bowl Champion

The former Buccaneer is looking for a new landing spot ahead of the NFL Draft.

The NFL Draft is only a week away and teams are positioning themselves for what should be an extremely active couple of days. That's led to a couple of roster transactions ahead of the festivities in Kansas City.

Earlier this week, the Seattle Seahawks cut former Buccaneers running back Darwin Thompson along with a few other players to free up space on the roster. Thompson spent 2022 on Seattle's practice squad and signed a reserve/future contract with the franchise following the season.

The former Utah State star was signed to the practice squad by Tampa Bay in 2021 after he failed to crack the 53-man roster with the Kansas City Chiefs. Thompson never appeared in a game with the franchise as Leonard Fournette, Ronald Jones II, Ke'Shawn Vaughn, and Giovani Bernard handled the duties in the backfield.

The Buccaneers released Thompson in January 2022 and the Chiefs swooped him back up the following day. He eventually landed with the Seahawks and spent the year under new Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Dave Canales. That means Thompson could be a potential fit with the franchise once again considering Canales' commitment to the running game.

Thompson was originally drafted by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent his first two seasons in the league with Kansas City and was a member of the team that won Super Bowl LIV. During his career, Thompson has rushed 64 times for 225 yards and a touchdown while catching 16 passes for 108 yards and another score.

The Oklahoma native spent the 2018 season at Utah State and put together a breakout campaign. He rushed 153 times for 1,044 yards with 14 touchdowns on the ground while catching 23 passes for 351 yards and two more scores.
