Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hire New Offensive Line Coach For 2024 Season

The Buccaneers' have their new offensive line coach.
In this story:

On Tuesday the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Liam Coen as their new offensive coordinator. Later that evening he made his first staff hire bringing aboard Kevin Carberry to coach the offensive line.

Carberry was the offensive line coach for the Rams from 2021-2022. He worked with Coen when he was the offensive coordinator for Los Angeles during the 2022 season. He was dismissed at the end of the year and signed on as the assistant offensive line coach with the Saints last season.

Injuries ravaged the Rams offensive line in 2022 and Carberry was forced to start 13 different offensive linemen over the 17-game season. That line was charged with replacing a retired Andrew Whitworth and Austin Corbett and allowed 59 sacks on the season starting a ton of youth and inexperienced players due to injury.

However, in the 2021 season, the line tied for sixth in the league with the least sacks allowed with just 31. In addition, the line finished with the seventh-best in QB sack rate (4.9%) and third-best in pressures allowed per dropback (26.8%). They also ranked number one in average time to pressure allowed on offense (2.67 seconds) and 14th in average time to throw (2.79 seconds).

There will be a large emphasis on turning around the Bucs rushing attack that finished 32nd in the NFL the last two seasons. Carberry along with Coen will be tasked with the job and although the results haven't been then during his time as offensive line coach the talent wasn't either.

In 2021 the Rams finished 25th in yards per game averaging just 99 yards per contest. However, it is important to note they did so with Sony Michel as their lead back with Darrell Henderson as the backup.

In 2022 behind a banged-up line they finished 27th with Cam Akers leading the back field. Darrell Henderson was also there, while Kyren Williams missed most of the season with an injury. They averaged just 97 yards per game that year.

However, there is a silver lining. Rachaad White is the best back he’s had to block for and the Bucs line, anchored by Tristan Wirfs, is better than the 2021 and 2022 Rams teams.
