Cardinals Content With QB Plan Until Kyler Murray Returns
The sky is blue, water is wet, and the Arizona Cardinals are entering a rebuild in 2023.
That's been quite clear with all of the offseason moves (or lack thereof) with a roster that has only seemingly worsened from their 4-13 season in 2022. A new front office and coaching staff brings promise of a brighter future, but that success won't come immediately.
There will indeed be bumps in the road, one of which the team is currently clearing with the health of quarterback Kyler Murray as he pushes forward in his recovery of a torn ACL/meniscus suffered late last season.
His timetable is unknown, and the Cardinals are very clear in their efforts to not rush him back.
“I'm not really concerned with a timeline,” Gannon told reporters at the annual NFL meeting at the Arizona Biltmore earlier this week.
"There is a long time before we line up and play a game. When Kyler is fully ready to play mentally and physically, that's when he will play. He was in Dallas with his surgeon this last week and he’s doing well. They like where he’s at. He’s going to start doing some things in the strength room. He’s coming along well.”
Cardinals fans have wanted the organization to target a handful of different free agent quarterbacks, though Gannon revealed the team is more than happy with their current stable of quarterbacks in Colt McCoy and David Blough.
"We feel good with David and Colt. We have had good conversations with both those guys. They are both raring to go. They both were asking Drew [Petzing] for the playbook and I was like, 'No, you don't need the playbook yet.' They are chomping at the bit."
That's not exactly what fans want to hear. Blough had a nice cameo for the Cardinals last year but still has yet to prove himself as a stable presence at quarterback and McCoy (who will be 37-years-old at the beginning of the regular season) only continues to climb in age.
Arizona is rebuilding, though they refuse to come out and say it. That's evident in their plans at quarterback.
