Former NFL QB Ranks Kyler Murray as Mid-Tier QB Ahead of 2023

The Arizona Cardinals hope to get Kyler Murray back on the field sooner rather than later. Former NFL QB Matt Cassel is holding his breath until then.

It feels like speculation will continue to swirl around Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and his return date until he's actually on the field.

Such is life for a quarterback as polarizing as Murray. The former Heisman winner and No. 1 overall pick was awarded a handsome contract last offseason before failing to meet expectations and eventually tearing his ACL/meniscus late in the regular season.

A lot of the noise around Murray mostly gravitates away from his on-field performance, as Call of Duty and study clauses are just a handful of talking points for Twitter users with "insert player szn" handles.

Yet Murray experienced career lows in statistics such as yards per attempt, yards per game, passer rating, etc. (table below from Pro Football Reference)

Between his level of play dropping and the comeback from major injury, Murray often finds himself towards the back of lists and power rankings for quarterbacks after 2022/heading into 2023.

That was no different than Matt Cassel's way-too-early 2023 NFL QB rankings for The 33rd Team, where Murray fell to the No, 18 spot.

"The 2022 season was a nightmare for the dynamic talent, who threw just 14 touchdown passes vs. seven interceptions. Kyler Murray also suffered a torn ACL in Week 14, forcing his season to end early. But the Arizona Cardinals wouldn’t have given him that long-contract extension last offseason if they felt like he couldn’t return from adversity. We’ll see soon enough if that decision pays off," said Cassel.

Derek Carr, Daniel Jones and Brock Purdy finished the in the three spots ahead of Murray while he did manage to place ahead of Matthew Stafford, Ryan Tannehill and Jimmy Garoppolo.

It's clear that while Murray is quite talented, people will be holding their hopes on him until he's able to get back on the field and shine under a new offense.
