Cardinals Keeping Options Open With Kyler Murray's Future
GLENDALE -- When it comes to the Arizona Cardinals, all outside eyes are on focused on 2024.
The Cardinals hit the reset button in a massive way this offseason, introducing a new coaching staff and front office to an organization that desperately needed a fresh presence in both areas.
Arizona GM Monti Ossenfort is still in his first year as a general manager, though the moves he's made have made him look like a seasoned vet.
The most notable of which was grabbing a first-round pick from the Houston Texans in the 2024 NFL Draft among other high picks made via trade. The Cardinals are set up quite nicely for the future thanks to Ossenfort's wheeling-and-dealing, even if 2023 doesn't project to be anything special.
With Houston and Arizona expected to be some of the worst teams in the league, the Cardinals could very well have either the No. 1 pick or two picks within the top five. Of course, actual football has to be played before the official order can be settled, but that hasn't stopped outside noise of what the team could potentially do next offseason.
"Just to be honest with you, it really doesn't matter where we pick, it doesn't. Our scouts have already begun the process of preparing for the 2024 draft. They started that process quite frankly the day after the 2023 draft ended. So our guys are working hard. It doesn't matter if we pick/where we pick - we're going to be prepared to pick at any spot that we are. We have to be prepared," said Ossenfort at camp earlier this week.
"You guys have seen how the draft works. 'That guy won't be there. That guy won't be - well see. We'll see.' So at this point it's way too early in the process to say 'Oh, we're going to be picking here, picking there.' We're canvassing, our scouts are going out. We're scouting the entire country just so we're prepared for the entire draft."
Much of that noise has been centered around the quarterback position. Kyler Murray is working his way back from a torn ACL, and there's a handful of quarterbacks emerging in next year's draft that have already been labeled generational. If Arizona finishes with the No. 1 pick, taking Caleb Williams or Drake Maye may be too tempting to pass.
Ossenfort isn't looking that far down the line.
"Holy moly, man. I'm just trying to get through Tuesday," joked Ossenfort. "Listen, every draft is the same. We scout every position equally. We don't go into a draft saying this year we're all set at this position. We're scouting every position no matter who is on the roster right now."
When asked if he felt Murray needed to prove anything, Arizona's general manager responded with the following:
"I think everybody in this organization needs to prove something every day. We're all here competing. We're at the highest level. If all of us don't bring it every single day, we're gonna get passed up. So whether that pertains to Kyler or specifically myself or JG or any other player on the team. This is a day-to-day business. If we don't bring it every day, improve every day, find a way to get better, it's going to be a long year."
All options are being kept open - and rightfully so. These sorts of conversations simply have to wait until we see Murray operating on the field this year before the Cardinals can move in whatever direction they feel appropriate.
