Isaiah Simmons Clearly Unhappy With Cardinals Releasing DeAndre Hopkins
The Arizona Cardinals released DeAndre Hopkins earlier this morning, a surprise to many for a few different reasons.
Hopkins still proved to be a valuable asset at receiver, though his price tag and age made it difficult for teams to match Arizona's asking price in a trade. Rumors followed Hopkins all throughout the offseason before his release today.
Now, Hopkins is set to be a free agent for the first time in his career, and the Cardinals got nothing in return for whom many consider to still be one of the elite pass catchers in the league.
The Cardinals did have some method behind the madness, however. By releasing him Pre June 1, they're able to completely eliminate his cap hit for 2024. Rebuilding the proper way has been a lofty goal of new general manager Monti Ossenfort, and now the future looks a bit more brighter (and lighter) in the salary cap.
However, not everybody sees Hopkins' departure in a bright light. Teammate and fellow Clemson product Isaiah Simmons wasn't shy on showing his feelings on the matter in a one-emoji tweet sent out shortly after the news broke:
Simmons and Hopkins were spotted together multiple times throughout the offseason, whether it was spending quality time with each other or getting ready for the upcoming season. They were also seen together often in last year's rendition of Hard Knocks.
The NFL is a business, and we're reminded of that nearly every week.
Simmons recently had his fifth-year option declined and is set to become a free agent after this season. Perhaps a reunion somewhere isn't out of the realm of possibilities.
