Chargers News: Derwin James Has High Praise For Young Safety Teammate

The All-Pro safety loves what he's seeing from his fellow safety

Los Angeles Chargers football will be back soon, fans. They are on vacation right now before returning for training camp in mid to late July. The Chargers looked good in their OTAs and minicamp in the last couple of weeks, which had fans looking forward to what they can accomplish this season.

There is a ton to look forward to when it comes to your Chargers, including the play of star safety Derwin James Jr. James is expected to have another great season under his belt with his ability to play anywhere on the field. The 26-year-old star is ready, but he's looking forward to his fellow young safety Aloji Gilman.

James talked highly of Gilman on the last day of minicamp, saying he is ready to become safety number two.

“He’s a guy that’s consistent,” James said about Gilman. “Everyone here counts on him. Everyone knows that he’s going to be where he needs to be. He’s getting better. He’s making calls. He’s confident. It’s exciting being out there. It’s been a lot of fun, a lot of energy out there, honestly.”

Gilman is entering his fourth year of his career and the final year of his contract with LA. This will be a big year for the 25-year-old as he will show he is worth a high-value contract.

He is set to be a starter alongside James after coming off his best season as a pro. In 2022, he played in 17 games, starting in five of them, and recorded three defended passes, one forced fumble, 58 combo tackles, and one interception.

It will be a big year for Gilman and the Chargers, as he will help guide the team to new heights while he tries to get himself a big contract.
