Chargers Betting on Current TE's Within Roster To Fill That Team Need
The Los Angeles Chargers covered a lot of holes throughout their roster in the NFL Draft last weekend. The Bolts' needed a pass catcher, and they did that with their first-round pick. They selected wide receiver Quentin Johnston from TCU, and they could've gone another way by selecting a tight end.
They didn't in the first round, and they decided they didn't need one at all. They had six more picks after their first and didn't select a tight end. Many people suspected they would, but that was never the case, according to Chargers GM Tom Telesco. Telesco told Chargers insider Lindsey Thiry he loves the teams' tight end depth.
“We like our tight end room. What draft what the board presents us,” general manager Tom Telesco said. “You really can’t manufacture anything. I think it’s a really good group of players. We have some depth there at that position.”
The Chargers' tight end room is really good; Gerald Evertt had his best season as a pro and solidified himself as a threat to the Chargers' explosive offense. Everett is only 28 years old and could be even better in 2023.
Head coach Brandon Staley put it as simple as this when discussing Everett.
“That guy was a weapon for us,”
Their TE1 is a fine player and was one of the other reasons for not selecting a tight end. Staley added that the timing and picks didn't align in the draft.
“It’s fair to say that it was definitely a deep tight end class,” coach Brandon Staley said. “They way the board fell, the timing wasn’t right for us. ... You can't get everything that you want.”
Beyond Everett, LA also has their TE2, Donald Parham Jr., and their 2021 third-round draft pick Tre' McKitty, a 24-year-old from Georgia.
LA is confident in their choices; let's hope it doesn't bite them in the butt.
