Chargers News: Bolts Ask To Interview Recent Super Bowl OC
Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan is a new name that joined the fold in the Chargers' coaching search, as the Cincinnati OC has done a terrific job orchestrating some of the best offenses in the league over the past couple of seasons.
Callahan's body of work was on display in 2021, where in quarterback Joe Burrow's first full season and wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase's rookie season, behind a patchwork offensive line, Cincy made the Super Bowl.
Perhaps Callahan's best work, however, came without Burrow, as he proved his high level of competency after Joe Burrow's season ending hand injury this year. With undrafted backup Jake Browning under center, where the team put up 27+ points 4 times.
As an offensive coach, Callahan can institute a new, QB-friendly system in LA that Justin Herbert should thrive in, as it seemed as though whether Burrow or Browning – the latter of whom played a couple of games without one of star wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase or Tee Higgins – was starting, the offense flowed at a high level, prioritizing quick completions to gain some rhythm prior to capitalizing on QB arm talent, accuracy, and poise with deeper, riskier throws.
Other names that have popped up in the discussion include the likes of interim head coach Giff Smith, a Rams assistant coach, a Cowboys assistant coach, and more.
