Chargers News: Bolts Could Land Highly Coveted GM By Next Week
The Los Angeles Chargers are currently looking for their next general manager but could wrap up their search early next week. The Spanos family did indicate that the search for the next HC and GM would be exhaustive, but searches can often come to abrupt ends with the right candidate.
So far, the team has interviewed New York Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown and interim GM JoJo Wooden. The plan was for the Chargers to interview San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters, but he was hired by the Washington Commanders.
Luckily, the other finalist for the GM position with the Commanders is now set to interview with the Chargers on Sunday.
Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham is set to interview on Sunday, and the Bolts could pull the trigger in bringing him on board.
According to Daniel Popper of The Athletic, "There is interest on both sides, and the Chargers now have a legitimate shot of landing one the top GM candidates from the past two hiring cycles."
Cunningham was part of an effort in Chicago that saw the team rebound from a 2-7 start to end 7-10. The Bears traded for edge rusher Montez Sweat at the deadline, who went on to secure a staggering six sacks in nine games.
Cunningham has a wealth of experience, as he served in a personnel role for the Baltimore Ravens, scouting for the Philadelphia Eagles, and as director of player personnel for the Eagles.
Cunningham served the Ravens during their Super Bowl win in 2012 and in 2017 with the Eagles.
Despite more interviews likely lined up, the Chargers could pull the trigger and bring Cunningham on after his interview on Sunday. It would be a huge get and would lead to the acquisition of the new head coach as well.
