Chargers News: Columnist Breaks Down LA's Reasoning to Keep Rookie Star QB on Roster

We hope we never see him in the game... in a good way
In this story:

The Los Angeles Chargers are weeks away from the start of training camp. It gives fans a chance to check out the team for that upcoming season, and it gives coaches the opportunity to evaluate their players and see who will stick around.

There will be a ton of decisions that the coaching staff will make during that time, but one thing is for sure, they'll have three quarterbacks on the roster. Chargers insider for the Atheltic Daniel Popper projected the 53-man roster and listed LA with three QBs: Easton Stick, rookie Max Duggan, and of course, Justin Herbert.

Pencil in Herbert as QB1; Stick will likely be QB2, leaving the QB3 spot to the rookie. The Bolts didn't draft him for no reason, and he should be on the team come the start of the season. Popper broke down; why they are, and should keep that third QB?

Keeping Duggan would allow the Chargers to take advantage of that emergency QB rule. The alternative is keeping a different player over Duggan on the 53-man. But that player would merely be a game day inactive. Duggan would effectively serve as a 49th active player if needed, and I have a hard time seeing the Chargers eschewing that potential advantage.

Because of the result of the Eagles-49ers NFC Championship game this past season, each team will be able to roster an extra QB if worst comes to worst.

Duggan has proved he is a formidable quarterback in his time at TCU, taking his team to new heights and coming in second in the Heisman Trophy voting. We hope to never see him on the field as long as Herbert is with the team, but at least we know we'll have a really good three if Stick and Herbert happen to go down.

Training camp can't come soon enough, and we can't wait to see what Duggan has in store for us.
