Chargers News: Justin Herbert Taking Advantage of His Height with New Throwing Mechanics
Different techniques work for different superstars and we have seen that throughout the history of the NFL, especially at the quarterback position. Eli Manning was a prime example of this with his soft wrist flicks whenever defenses collapsed on him along with Tim Tebow's habit of fully dropping his arm back. The art of learning and obtaining new skills is what allows the game's brightest to continue thriving.
Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers is no exception to this and it appears that after three seasons of dominance, he is implementing some new mechanics into his throwing to find more success while using his physical traits to their fullest. One of the most intriguing aspects about Herbert coming out of college was his frame as he stood at 6'6 and weighed in at 235 lbs.
In the early weeks of 2023 OTA's, Herbert has continued getting back into prime shape after spending the previous months recovering from a shoulder operation. He's been getting comfortable throwing deep bombs to Quentin Johnston and getting to know the plans that Kellen Moore has for this new group.
If you take a look at the attached video above, you will notice some slight changes to Herbert's throw.
Chargers Wire's Juliette Jones was the first to notice that the superstar QB had started straying away from his old side-arm method that was a little lower and has started to extend a bit higher.
"For his first three seasons, Herbert’s throwing mechanics was that of a low-release side-arm variety. We saw Herbert execute many of these passes in 2020 and 2021. Still, the mechanic continued to embed itself into his overall throwing motion in the 2022 season – which could have been a byproduct of his rib injury or just a general coaching strategy on Shane Day’s part. As we continue to watch Herbert in OTAs this summer, we can see a clear change in the way he passes the football. His release is higher, the arc of the pass is lifted, and thankfully the velocity is still of an elite caliber."

Let's see if he decides to stick with this style once the new season starts.
