The quarterback position is easily the most important on a football field and arguably in all of sports. It’s why we see teams pay such high premiums for talent once they find a player that they deem a franchise guy. In 2020, the Los Angeles Chargers found their guy and now are expected to keep him long term.

Justin Herbert, out of the University of Oregon, has taken the league by storm and captivated the audiences in Los Angeles since his arrival. Chargers expert Lee Hacksaw Hamilton expects Herbert to get a new contract for at least $50 million a season.

It would put Herbert into the upper echelon of paid players in the NFL and in all likelihood, his contract will surpass the one that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts just got, which averages to $51 million a season. Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals is one to watch as well in comparing new potential contracts with Herbert.

By his standards, Herbert had a “down” season last year but still showed that even in a down year, he was more than capable of leading the team to wins. Herbert led the Chargers to a postseason appearance but the team was ultimately bounced in the Wild Card round. He dealt with different injuries throughout the year that hampered his play but is looking at 2023 as a bounce back season.

Herbert finished the year throwing for 4,739 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with a 68.2 completion percentage. He is the prototypical type of player that teams love at the quarterback position and since joining the Chargers, he has helped take their offense to another level.

Los Angeles has their guy that they believe can lead them to the promise land and now it’s time to pay him what he deserves.
