Chargers News: Kellen Moore Expected to Bring Down The Field Presence

The Bolts' new OC could unlock an extra gear for LA.
In this story:

The Los Angeles Chargers had all the pieces in place for a prolific offensive attack last season.

With wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, running back Austin Ekeler, and of course quarterback Justin Herbert, the Chargers surely would have one of the best offenses in the league last year.

Those hopes didn't come to fruition, and following a shocking playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, their was a changing of the guard on the coaching staff as Kellen Moore was brought to be the Chargers new offensive coordinator -- in what could be a make or break year for head coach Brandon Staley.

Moore is coming off a largely successful tenure in Dallas, where he transformed a mediocre unit into a dangerous group over his four seasons as OC.

Now his next task is to make a potentially potent Charger offense live up to those expectations in 2023 and beyond, and he'll have the weapons to do it.

Not only are Herbert, Williams, Allen, and Ekeler all back this season, but LA added a gamebreaking wide receiver in the draft in TCU's Quentin Johnston. The rookie has been drawing rave reviews throughout camp, and should provide a key weapon for Moore as he tries to make LA into more of a vertical threat.

And Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox sees the Chargers as having a recipe for success in 2023

"'Most offensive coordinators have play-action concepts built from their bread-and-butter runs, and Moore certainly includes several in his playbook," Ted Nguyen and Daniel Popper of

The Athletic

wrote. "'But where Moore excels is in designing plays that create mismatches downfield.'"

Moore will be implementing an entirely new system in camp, and with elite talent at his disposal, it could create one of the most dangerous offenses in the entire NFL this season."

Given the Chargers' collection of weapons on offense, Moore certainly could turn the Bolts into one of the best offenses in the NFL this coming year.

And if he can pull that off, the Bolts could be dangerous in the AFC in 2023.
