Chargers News: LA Trio Falls in 2023 Rankings

Too high or too low?
In this story:

The Chargers enter 2023 with some massive expectations. They have a loaded roster on both sides of the ball and should have no issue competing for a playoff spot if they can stay healthy. The team has one of the leagues best offenses, led by star quarterback Justin Herbert, and they should be able to score with the best across the league.

Herbert has plenty of weapons to throw too such as Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and more. LA has one of the better trios in the NFL and came in ranked as the fifth best in the league by CBS Sports Jared Dubin. Last season at this time, they were ranked first so there was a drop off for Los Angeles.

"A change in offensive coordinator from Joe Lombardi to former Cowboys coordinator Kellen Moore should finally get Herbert throwing the ball down the field more often. A player with his skill set ranking 31st out of 35 qualifying quarterbacks in air yards per attempt over the past two seasons is inexcusable. Prescott ranked a much more respectable 11th among the same group of players, and if Moore can nudge Herbert in that direction, L.A. will be better for it. Still, his top two targets are likely to remain Ekeler and Allen, who excel at finding the soft spots underneath and remain absolute target monsters who produce at a high level whenever they're healthy."

Per CBS Sports

The way that the team lost in the postseason last year likely played into their ranking. They showed limited offensive schemes and an inability to make plays when needed in their AFC Wild Card playoff game loss. But there is plenty of hope for this team.

Adding in new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore should help the trip excel this season. He should be able to put them into places to succeed and not allow the offense to go stagnant as it did a season ago.

2023 will be a make or break year for the Chargers in many ways. They need to make a deep playoff run otherwise they run the risk of forcing the front office into making changes such as a new head coach or roster construction.

The pressure is on but this Chargers team understands it and isn't running from the expectations.
