Chargers News: LA's 3 Most Important Moves of the 2023 Offseason
Your Los Angeles Chargers have their work laid out before them for the 2023 NFL season. No longer will the football world view them as an up and coming squad that could upset the Kansas City Chief in the AFC West. They instead were the laughing stock at the end of last season and it's safe to say not a lot of opposing fanbases take them as seriously.
However, Tom Telesco and the rest of the Bolts' front office made some big moves and acquisitions in these past few months. Some of them were geared towards bolstering the current roster and others were made while keeping the future of the franchise in mind.
If you liked what you saw recently in OTA's and minicamp, that is just the beginning. Here are the three biggest moves the Chargers made in the 2023 offseason.
1. Holding On To Austin Ekeler
Even though the chances of actually finding a trade partner for Austin Ekeler were low in the first place, I'm sure all of his teammates and coaches are beyond happy to have him back. And the reason why a deal was so hard to come by was because of the situation he had placed himself into.
The 27-year-old star made it clear he wanted to represent the entire group of RB's in the league and help shoot their market value up. Unfortunately, he appeared to be alone in this movement and he ended up agreeing to return to the Bolts for at least one more year with $2 million worth of incentives included.
Ekeler is coming off of two straight seasons where he recorded over 900 yards and was the best receiving RB in the NFL... wouldn't you want him on your squad?
2. Bye Bye Drue Tranquill... Hello Eric Kendricks
This was actually one of the more surprising Chargers' chess moves this past free agency period and trust me, it hurts to see Tranquill getting comfortable over there in Kansas City. However, replacements on the defensive line do not get much better than a former All-Pro in Eric Kendricks.
He played a key role in the Minnesota Vikings boasting a top defense in the league while also finishing in first place in the NFC North. Kendricks is also coming off of two very elite years where he recorded over 130 combined tackles in both campaigns.
LA needs no reminder just how important defense will be this season.
3. Kellen Moore To The Rescue
If the Los Angeles Chargers are able to win 12 games or more in 2023 and Brandon Staley holds onto his job, it will likely be because Kellen Moore's impact as their newest offensive coordinator worked like a charm.
A ton of fans as of late have been pointing their fingers at Staley and trust me, he deserves some blame but his job is to oversee everything not just offense. This will now be on Moore's shoulders and he will have plenty of weapons to work with on this side of the ball.
He oversaw some productive offenses during his time with the Dallas Cowboys and he hopes to replicate that to an even greater degree in LA.
