Week 18 last season was a meaningless game for the Los Angles Chargers. However, head coach Brandon Staley decided to play starters to keep things fresh before their postseason game. Wide receiver Mike Williams was one of those and unfortunately, he suffered an injury that left him out of the playoff game the following week.

It was a big blow to a Chargers team that was getting hot. Williams was a key member of the offense and they really missed him against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Los Angeles blew a big lead to the Jaguars but will never know how things may have turned out if Williams had been on the field. Williams finally spoke about the topic:

“I mean, the coach wanted us to play, so that’s what we had to do,” Williams said, speaking publicly on the subject for the first time. “That’s what we get paid to do, play football. I was with whatever decision he made.”

The hope was that Williams would miss the Wild Card game and return the following week if Los Angeles had advanced. But they didn't and the rest is history.

“For me, I understood why he wanted us to play,” Williams said. “We had a lot of momentum going into that game. He wanted to keep the momentum going. Coach Staley is our leader. We believe in him. We can go with whatever he wants us to do.”

Per The LA Times

In 13 games for the Chargers last season, Williams put up 62 catches for 895 yards and four touchdowns. He says that he is as healthy as ever heading into 2023 and it should be fun to watch him grow as a player.

Williams will be relied upon heavily once again and will be a major reason as to why the Chargers are a lot of peoples sleeper Super Bowl team.
