Interim Chargers HC Giff Smith Hired by So Cal Rival

Smith took over for Brandon Staley to close out the regular season.

Former Los Angeles Chargers interim head coach Giff Smith has been hired by the Los Angeles Rams to be their new defensive line coach and run game coordinator. He gets to stay in Southern California, which gives the veteran coach a chance to potentially make more noise around the league.

NFL Insider Tom Pelissero was the first to break the news of the hiring.

Smith interviewed for the open Chargers head coaching job before the role was filled by Jim Harbaugh. He took over for the Bolts over the final three games of the regular season after Brandon Staley was fired.

He was loved by the players in the locker room, and many were disappointed that they couldn't get him a win as the Bolts head coach. Los Angeles dropped all three games to close out the season with Smith leading the charge. However, the Bolts did look much better under Smith than with Staley.

Smith will get the chance to work under Rams head coach Sean McVay. Many other coaches have relished the opportunity to work with McVay, with a few of them turning that into other job openings around the NFL.

This is a great move for Smith's career, and it could end up leading to a better role down the line. His experience working in the NFL didn't go unnoticed this offseason, and he gets to stay in Los Angeles.
