Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has established himself as one of the better players in the NFL. He is eligible for a new contract extension that could make him the highest-paid signal-caller in the league.

He wants to extend with the Chargers, and the Chargers are willing to pay him the kind of money that will be required. So, what is the holdup?

Apparently, Herbert’s camp is waiting to see what happens over in Ohio with the Cincinnati Bengals. They have their own star quarterback to pay in Joe Burrow, and both camps are trying to hold out as long as they can to see if the other will blink.

“Burrow’s camp wants Herbert to go first, setting the benchmark to beat. Herbert’s camp wants Burrow to go first, giving Herbert a ceiling that he can try to match — or maybe even to exceed.”

Per NBC Sports

Both players deserve the extreme amounts of money coming their way, so this is just a negotiating tactic by their agents. It makes sense because then they can tell their client they got them the highest-paid deal in history.

But on the surface of things, Herbert likely deserves just slightly less than Burrow. Burrow has seen much more success in the league so far in their careers. But Herbert’s camp sees the two players as equal in comparison.

"The teams benefit because the players aren’t agitating for deals, as they enter their fourth NFL seasons. By all rights, both should already have their contracts. And if they were ready to go, their deals likely would be done."

Per NBC Sports

So, the wait continues. But it likely won’t last too much longer with the new season coming up here soon. Both sides understand that injury can happen at any time, so making sure to lock up the years and money now is critical.
