Chargers News: LA DE Unpacks How Team Can Stop Jets' Zach Wilson This Week
With just two days until Monday night when the Los Angeles Chargers will head out to New York for a road game against the New York Jets, the team is looking to get back to being .500 after a tough 3-4 start to the 2023 NFL season.
The Chargers are coming off a dominating victory against the Chicago Bears last Sunday night where they won 30-13, and are looking to change the narrative of their season after a struggling start.
This week, defensive end Morgan Fox joined NFL Total Access and discussed his passion for helping veterans as the NFL is hosting their Salute to Service campaign from weeks 9-11 while Veterans Day will take place on Nov. 11.
Aside from explaining his passion as to why he provides these services for veterans, Fox was asked what the game plan will be against Zach Wilson and the Jets.
"You have to have smart rush lanes, he's a mobile quarterback, he can make a lot of things happen offscript. So you gotta try to keep him in the pocket and you can't rush crazy."
Per NFL Total Access
Fox went on to explain that keeping Wilson contained will be the key to success for a Chargers defense that ranks 11th in sacks this year.
The Chargers were expected to be a top team in the NFL this year, largely due to their strong defense. However, they have had a disappointing start to the season, either blowing leads or allowing opposing teams to come dangerously close to winning. As a result, head coach Brandon Staley is now on the hot seat and if things turn to the worst, he could be relieved of his duties before the season ends.
The Chargers as a team have underwhelmingly underperformed as opposing teams have averaged 24 points a game against them.
Despite having a 4-3 record, the Jets have been one of the biggest disappointments in 2023 and that's because of their recent blockbuster free-agent acquisition Aaron Rodgers is likely out for the rest of the season due to a torn Achilles in week one against the Buffalo Bills despite rumors that he plans to come back in Dec.
Stepping in for Rodgers this year is New York's former number two overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Zach Wilson.
After putting on a showcase on his pro day before the draft, Wilson has struggled to put it all together in the NFL as he has yet to throw over 2500 yards and over 10 touchdowns in a single season.
Staying in the pocket and releasing the ball has been a constant issue for Wilson in his three-year career. If the Chargers pass rush can get in there and disrupt him Monday night, it should be a game Los Angeles should win.
