With Chargers’ Season Effectively Over, It’s Time To Fire Brandon Staley
The 2023 season for the Los Angeles Chargers, as we've been lamenting for the past two months, can only be described as underwhelming, and it all culminated in an unofficial end on Sunday with their Week 14 loss to the Denver Broncos. The Bolts fell to a 5-8 record.
The disappointment was further compounded by their franchise quarterback, Justin Herbert, who will miss the remainder of the season due to a right index finger injury. Now, with virtually nothing to play for in the current season, the team should shift its focus to strategic improvements for the upcoming year. Priority number one: parting ways with head coach Brandon Staley.
Staley, who took the reins as the 17th head coach in Chargers franchise history, should not be entering his fourth year at the helm as the team heads into the 2024 season. The Chargers cannot be considered a serious franchise if that turns out to be the case. Staley's tenure with the Bolts has been nothing short of disappointing, with issues plaguing the team from top to bottom. Despite the abundance of talent acquired over the years, the Chargers have failed to meet expectations and have consistently fallen short.
Setting aside the recurring defensive miscues, the team's overall performance has been lackluster. The front office has equipped Staley with more resources than most other head coaches in recent Chargers history, yet the results have been far from impressive.
This is particularly concerning given the presence of possibly the most talented quarterback in the game in, Justin Herbert. Player development has stagnated on both sides of the ball, and the team has failed to take significant steps in the right direction. Staley is a major contributor to these shortcomings.
It's clear that Staley was not the right fit for the Chargers. He has not lived up to expectations, and there's a pressing need for a change. The team requires a breath of fresh air—a coach in whom the players believe, for whom they will fight, and, most importantly, someone who can elevate the team's performance with the talent at their disposal. Moving forward, the Chargers need a leader who can instill confidence and guide the team to meaningful improvement and results.
