Colts Request Another Second Interview with Head Coach Prospect
The Indianapolis Colts continue to expand the search for their next head coach with the recent request to bring in Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn for his second interview.
Glenn had his initial interview on Jan. 14 and has now crossed into the next stage to becoming the leader of the Colts. This second interview request will likely come with some criticism, mostly due to the low rankings from 2022 for the Lions' defense, whom Glenn was coaching.
Here’s a brief rundown of the numbers: last in the league in overall yards allowed per game (392.4), 30th in total passing yards allowed (4,179), 29th in total rushing yards allowed (2,491), and tied for 30th in total points allowed (427; with the Colts and Minnesota Vikings).
So, with numbers that reflect that way, it’s easy to see why Glenn hasn’t been the highest sought-after option to lead a team, especially with a defensive background that performed with those stats.
However, what should be put into perspective is that the Lions started multiple rookies on defense. One of those was a defensive rookie of the year candidate, defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson out of Michigan. Hutchinson was electric, with 9.5 sacks, 52 total tackles, and three interceptions, which for a defensive lineman is insanity.
Another rookie was safety Kerby Joseph out of Illinois, who would lead the Lions in interceptions (4) and would tie for the lead in passes defended (8), so Glenn can coach young talent to succeed, the proof being in the rookies and their immediate impact.
Glenn may not have overall defensive numbers that will jump off of a page, but when it’s put into context who he had starting at key defensive positions, and that they were rookies, it changes the perspective on him a bit.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard sees something of a head coach in Glenn bringing him in for a second interview. Will Glenn impress to be a finalist? He has the grit and toughness, along with the ability to develop young talent, that the Colts seek, so it’s possible.
Other candidates who have already or are set for second interviews are Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, New York Giants defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Rich Bisaccia, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, and Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.
