Adding RB 'Important' For Commanders, Says Ron Rivera

The Washington Commanders could be looking for a running back in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Washington Commanders are just a few weeks away from welcoming their new rookie class.

Last year, Washington made a splash in last year's draft by taking running back Brian Robinson Jr. in the third round, and the team might get another ball carrier this year.

“Well, adding to it is important for us," Rivera said. "We’ve got a couple of guys that we like that are going to compete as well. But we will most certainly look for another guy to come in and be a multi-purpose guy. And do we have that guy in the roster? Maybe. Is there a guy out there in free agency? Potentially. And could you draft one? Possibly.”

Robinson Jr. will likely shoulder most of the carries in the backfield in 2023, but a committee is needed in order to have a dynamic running game. Antonio Gibson will also be a massive contributor, but his contract expires following the season and he could likely explore opportunities to start outside of the Commanders.

Given the fact that neither Jacoby Brissett nor second-year pro Sam Howell have solidified themselves as dominant passers, the run game will likely take more responsibility in building the offense this year than in years past, and that could mean adding new young talent to the position in next month's draft.
