Ravens Hire Coach Todd Monken; Commanders Favorites for Eric Bieniemy?
The offensive coordinator free agent pool lost another member Tuesday morning after the Baltimore Ravens hired Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken to replace Greg Roman in the same position.
By going with Monken, the Ravens have bowed out of the Eric Bieniemy sweepstakes and the Washington Commanders appear to be the favorite for his services.
Bieniemy, 53, recently won his second ring with the Kansas City Chiefs as their offensive coordinator. He's led the offense every year since Patrick Mahomes was named the starter and the unit has been in the top 5 since Bieniemy took over for Matt Nagy in 2018.
Now a free agent, Bieniemy has drawn interest from several teams, including the Ravens and Commanders as an offensive coordinator and the Indianapolis Colts as a head coach.
But with the Ravens and Colts going in different directions, the Commanders appear to be the last man standing.
The Commanders have interviewed eight different candidates, but have been patient in their search to talk to Bieniemy, who has been busy with leading the Chiefs in the playoffs for the past month or so. Now that the job is complete, he can look towards his future.
While there's always the possibility that Bieniemy signs another contract with the Chiefs, he only signed a one-year deal last offseason, possibly because Kansas City doesn't want to keep him.
Head coach Andy Reid has praised Bieniemy publicly and knows the idea of him leaving the Chiefs is a real one.
"Eric Bieniemy has been tremendous for us and I think tremendous for the National Football League,'' Chiefs coach Andy Reid said via ESPN. "I'm hoping he has an opportunity to go somewhere and do his thing where he can run the show and be Eric Bieniemy.''
Could that somewhere be Washington? It's certainly looking like it.
