Eric Bieniemy Update: Does Coach 'Fit' Commanders Better Than Greg Roman?
The Washington Commanders on Tuesday completed an interview with Greg Roman and on Thursday have scheduled their session with Eric Bieniemy as coach Ron Rivera searched for a new offensive coordinator.
A puzzling issue: What Bieniemy does schematically as the coordinator with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs resembles in no way what Roman did during his time running the Baltimore Ravens offense.
And while what we know about Rivera's philosophy doesn't make one a "better coach'' than the other ...
It's either "weird'' or "encouraging'' that Bieniemy appears to be one of the two current finalists for the position vacated by the firing of Scott Turner.
Roman is a run-first guy, and certainly has accomplished big things - and creative things - within that framework, with Ravens QB Lamar Jackson winning the 2019 MVP award as the crown jewel.
Bieniemy has been the Chiefs coordinator since 2018, working under Andy Reid, and he just helped the team win a second Super Bowl in the last five seasons. ... and "creativity'' has been a hallmark of the Reid/Bieniemy teaming in K.C., keyed of course by 2022 MVP (and Super Bowl MVP) Patrick Mahomes.
Hiring Roman would signal Rivera's commitment to a run-first offense. But at least interviewing Bieniemy, who is out of contract with the Chiefs, maybe signals a willingness to explore new ideas in D.C.
