NFL Draft: Commanders Trade With Super Bowl Champion Chiefs?
For the first time in his tenure as the Washington Commanders’ head coach, Ron Rivera feels like they have invested in team-building.
Another sign of that could be trading back in the draft to accumulate more picks. In Bleacher Report’s article on hypothetical trades Washington can make, they traded the No. 16 and No. 233 overall picks with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire the No. 31, 63 and 166 overall picks.
“The Commanders may not be far off from being a playoff contender,” Bleacher Report writes. “So if they can draft multiple players who could be contributors in 2023, it may set them up for success in the near future.”
With that hypothetical trade, Washington would have four picks inside the top 100 in the 2023 draft.
Trading back would make it the second consecutive year Washington has done so in the first round. The Commanders traded back from the No. 11 overall pick with the New Orleans Saints for the No. 16, third-round and fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft.
With the No. 16 pick, Washington took Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson. In 12 games, Dotson had 35 catches for 523 yards and seven touchdowns, which tied with Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson for the most among rookie receivers.
If Washington can trade back 15 spots and still draft a player who makes a similar impact to Dotson, it’d be proof that its team-building is heading in the right direction.
