Robert Griffin III In Charge of Commanders When Dan Snyder Sells?
The Washington Commanders have heard sharp criticism from former standout player Robert Griffin III regarding the failings of outgoing owner Dan Snyder.
He may soon get the opportunity to put his real effort where his mouth was.
“I’m head-over-heels about that process,” Griffin said on the "The Rich Eisen Show'' about him being in talks to join the Josh Harris/Mitchell Rales/Magic Johnson group that is bidding by buy the Commanders.
And one of the reasons why? Griffin very frankly notes how his career as a quarterback in Washington also ended up failing - or, at least, falling short of expectations.
Said RGIII “To be a player for that team (as the second-overall pick in 2012) to not have my career go the way that I wanted it to, or the fans wanted it to, it would be a full circle type of moment to come back and try to help that team and organization build the winner that the fans deserve.”
Injuries largely derailed Griffin's chance for real success with the Washington franchise. That is of course much different from the allegedly scandalous reign of Snyder, who might get $6 billion in his sale.
There are no guarantees of what Commanders leadership will look like in a post-Snyder era; team president Jason Wright and coach Ron Rivera have already spoken frankly about their relative lack of job security. The primary owners may opt to be hands-on. NBA legend Magic Johnson has skills in business and marketing. Maybe leaving the existing leadership in place for 2023 makes sense.
But Robert Griffin III being involved with the Commanders in a different way, in whatever way? It wouldn't be a full-circle moment because it would take him time to actually create position change, in whatever role he would play.
But it would be a full-circle opportunity.
