Cam Newton Offers to Sign with Commanders as Sam Howell Backup

The fact is, as it relates to Cam Newton in DC: His greatest year came as the MVP QB in Carolina with Ron Rivera as his coach. And time and time again, now-Washington coach Rivera has not bothered with the idea.
In this story:

Cam Newton is ready to make what is to him a concession. It involves the Washington Commanders and it’s all in honor of an apparent buddy of his named Sam Howell.

Earlier this year, Newton made headlines when he said there aren't 32 current NFL quarterbacks better than him.

Actually, to be precise, what he said was, "Ain't 32 m*****f******s better than me,'' adding via a video that "these randoms keep getting jobs" in the league while Newton, 33, cannot get work.

Now the former league MVP, who hasn't played in the NFL since 2021, is being more specific, and is listing all of the QBs who he would be willing to serve as a backup to.

And Sam is on the lucky list.

Here are the names on the list:

  • Deshaun Watson
  • Lamar Jackson
  • Justin Fields
  • Tua Tagovailoa
  • Malik Willis
  • C.J., Stroud
  • Bryce Young
  • Anthony Richardson
  • Jalen Hurts
  • Aaron Rodgers
  • Josh Allen
  • Sam Howell

"Randoms''? Yes - no offense to Howell - there are some "randoms'' on the list.

Newton's list seems to include some young guys with whom he has some background ties with ... a noble enough thought that means Washington's Howell, a 2022 fifth-round rookie, gets cited along on a list that does not include Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys. Nor, apparently, does Cam want to work behind Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City or behind Joe Burrow in Cincinnati.

The fact is, as it relates to Cam in DC: His greatest year came as the MVP QB in Carolina with Ron Rivera as his coach. And time and time again, now-Washington coach Rivera has not bothered with the idea.

The Commanders enter the 2023 season with major question marks surrounding the quarterback spot. But there is no indication - Cam’s volunteerism aside - that Newton is seen as part of the answer.
