Sam Howell vs. Jacoby Brissett: 'Exciting Time' for Commanders

There's excitement in the air at Washington Commanders training camp with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett competing for the starting quarterback job.
In this story:

The Washington Commanders are one of the few teams in the NFL without a solidified direction at quarterback going into the season.

After saying goodbye to Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke this offseason, the team promoted 2022 fifth-round pick Sam Howell up the depth chart and signed veteran Jacoby Brissett ... ultimately creating a quarterback competition in training camp.

"That's what we're expecting Jacoby [Brissett] and Sam [Howell] to do is push each other so we can get the best out of him and again, everything is going forward," coach Ron Rivera said. "I mean, this is an exciting time for us. You know, it's a change. It's an opportunity for us to go forward.”

Howell has the edge given his youth, and the Commanders would have likely signed someone better than Brissett if they felt he wasn't ready for the task to become the starting quarterback.

The Commanders are undergoing a big year in 2023. There's a new owner in town, Rivera is on the hot seat and it's a real make-or-break year for the team. The quarterback decision could be the difference in whether the coaching staff is back next year or not.

So based on Rivera's comments, he must be a thrill-seeker, because this "exciting" time for him and the Commanders could cost him his job if it doesn't result in wins and a playoff appearance this season.
