Commanders' Brian Robinson Jr. Reflects on Journey After Carjacking Incident
Almost a year to the day, Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. wasn't thinking about training camp or preseason games; he was lying in a hospital bed after being shot twice in the leg after a carjacking incident.
It would cause Robinson Jr. to miss the opening month of football, and it was a long, arduous grind to make his way back...but it was a battle he was up for.
In a piece called The Players Post on the Commanders' official website, Robinson Jr. detailed at length his journey last year. Transcribed from interviews by numerous Washington content team members, Robinson's story was shared.
It gave an in-depth look at what the running back was going through, and it also detailed the mentality of the person he is.
"I'm a warrior," Robinson said. "I feel like I can stand my ground against anything I'm up against. If the battle finds me, I can fight it. That's just my mindset playing running back in the NFL. I want to be the best, so I have to continue creating the right habits on and off the field, investing my time correctly, and sticking to my script.
"Everybody has their way of being who they are. I have to stick to my script and what makes me who I am. And to whoever is the first defender I see this season, remember this: don't run."
Once Robinson came back (it was just six weeks), the welcome was heartwarming, and he got down to business straight away.
He would finish his shortened rookie season with 797 yards and two touchdowns from his 12 games.
It was no doubt the story of the year for the Commanders as Robinson had come from so far back to then becoming a focal point of Scott Turner's offense.
Robinson quickly developed into a bruising, punishing back who seemed to like inflicting pain on defenders.
Now, as he embarks on his second season in the NFL, he is getting a full preseason under his belt as he looks to put last year's incident firmly in the rearview mirror.
