Commanders BREAKING: Emmanuel Forbes Signs; Comp to Cowboys Star?

Dallas Cowboys star Trevon Diggs looks a lot like how Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes wants to play in the NFL.
In this story:

Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes has something to prove in his rookie season. Of course, first he had to sign his first-ever contract, and at what we estimate to be a $16.5 million deal over four years, the newcomer has now done so.

What’s next? Many were surprised to see the former Mississippi State product as the second cornerback off the board in the NFL Draft over other prospects like Oregon's Christian Gonzalez. However, at Washington's rookie minicamp this past weekend, Forbes immediately proved why the Commanders took him with such a high pick, flashing some moves reminiscent of one of his new rivals on the Dallas Cowboys.

"The 16th pick in April’s draft came out flying in rookie minicamp—with a pick on the first day that reminded one Washington coach of Trevon Diggs—in how instinctively and aggressively Forbes went after the ball," SI writes.

Diggs and Forbes have a lot in common. In 2021, Diggs recorded an NFL-best 11 interceptions, leading the NFL. Forbes was also setting records in college, recording six pick-sixes during his three years at Mississippi State.

Even though there are glowing reviews coming out of rookie minicamp, Forbes still has a long way to go with question marks left and right.

"Of course, the tape on the former Mississippi State star was spectacular. No one debates his reel was one of the best in the draft," SI writes. His frame is the problem. And to be fair, in a noncontact minicamp setting, the sturdiness of that 6-foot, 166-pound body wasn’t going to be tested. So we’ll see, come summer and fall, how he answers those questions. But so far, so good."

The Commanders took a risk on Forbes given his size, but if he ends up playing like Diggs, Washington's gamble will eventually pay off. And it all starts with his first contract.
