Why Commanders Coach Eric Bieniemy Has 'Whole New Outlook'
The Washington Commanders hired offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy away from the Kansas City Chiefs in a cycle where he was expected to be a head coach.
Now, Bieniemy is relearning how to work in an organization outside of Kansas City, but still as an offensive coordinator under Ron Rivera.
And he recently noted how his view of the NFL has changed since the move, per Bleacher Report.
"I'm fired up and excited. It's given me a whole new outlook," Bieniemy said.
Bieniemy has brought an entirely new offensive look to Washington, working with quarterbacks Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett to construct a bounce-back offense in 2023.
After coaching in Kansas City for a decade, the former NFL running back Bieniemy knew it was time for a change in organization. While that change was envisioned as a promotion, he's making the most of an offseason move that doesn't include being a head coach.
"When you've been in a place for 10 years, you have a tendency to take certain things for granted," Bieniemy said, per ESPN's John Keim. "This has helped me to go back and dot all the I's and cross all the T's."
Bieniemy finding new challenges in the task of turning the Commanders into a respectable offensive team only makes sense. Having built up Patrick Mahomes and one of the league's best offenses ever, Washington presents plenty of challenges.
If he's able to flip Howell, Brissett and playmakers like Terry McLaurin into a formidable offense in 2023, there's no reason he won't roam the sidelines as a head coach next season.
