Commanders 'Commitment to Mediocrity' Hurting Coach Ron Rivera Ranking
The Washington Commanders brought coach Ron Rivera in to be a stabilizing presence for a franchise that was mired in chaos at just about every level.
Entering his fourth season at the helm the Commanders aren't completely free of the frenzy he entered into, but they're a lot better off than they were when he arrived.
In fact, while many project Washington to be picking in the top 10 of next year's NFL Draft, there's a defiant confidence within parts of the fan base as they see talent where others see holes.
Due in part to the work he's done since arriving, Rivera comes in No. 19 in 33rd Team's ranking of current NFL coaches.
"Rivera is a good football coach and a better man," says 33rd Team. "But the Washington Commanders' seeming commitment to mediocrity isn't helping his cause for lists like this."
This ranking isn't just about the Commanders though.
"I tried to account for what each coach has done with what they've been given for as long as they've been doing it," 33rd Team prefaced.
For Rivera, that includes nine years leading the Carolina Panthers.
In his best season, Rivera's Panthers landed in Super Bowl L where they unfortunately fell 24-10 to the Denver Broncos.
That season resulted in an AP NFL Coach of the Year Award, his second including the first that came following the 2013 season.
With any luck, Rivera will be in the running for another award, and if his perceived gamble to roll with second-year quarterback Sam Howell pans out, he'll certainly rise up these rankings next offseason.
