Commanders Should be 'All Over Dalvin Cook' Says Former GM

Dalvin Cook still remains a free agent, with former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi stating the Commanders should go after the Pro Bowler.

The Dalvin Cook sweepstakes appear to be a two-horse race between the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins ... but what about the Washington Commanders?

While Cook looks to have his heart set on a move to the Bills or Dolphins, former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi thinks that the Commanders should seriously look at the four-time Pro Bowler.

“They need a running back that can be electric," Lombardi said on the Pat McAfee Show. "[Brian] Robinson averaged 3.9 [yards] a carry, [Antonio] Gibson averaged 3.9 [yards] a carry, they don’t have a playmaker. When they had J.D. McKissic, they were very good offensively.

“If Washington had Dalvin Cook to go along with Sam Howell, a rookie in Eric Bieniemy’s West Coast Offense, I think that would take a lot of pressure off the young quarterback.”

Salary will likely dictate where Cook lands, and if he asks for around $10 million APY, that likely rules out Washington. But there is a case to be made, as Lombardi states, to give Sam Howell some more help as he embarks on his first season as an NFL starter.

With Brian Robinson, Antonio Gibson, and the drafted Chris Rodriguez Jr., Eric Bieniemy could no doubt do with a player of Cook's caliber to mentor and motivate the room, but salary will be a sticking point.

Additionally, having Howell on a rookie deal allows Washington to be more aggressive in free agency over the next few seasons, and having a $10 million running back on your books isn't ideal.

The market for running backs has nosedived significantly this offseason, but could Washington at least make a call to gauge interest from Cook? For some, that should be the minimum requirement.
