Commanders DE Montez Sweat on Trade Block?

The Washington Commanders will likely have to choose between Montez Sweat and Chase Young for the future.

The Washington Commanders have a decision to make when it comes to the defensive end position.

With defensive tackles Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen receiving contract extensions, the odds that Washington can keep Montez Sweat and Chase Young are slim.

CBS Sports tabbed Montez Sweat as a potential trade target, due to the money the Commanders have given to Payne and Allen along with Young.

“With 29 sacks in five seasons and a career-high 28 QB hits in 2022, he could fetch premium compensation (potentially for a future QB splash) even entering a contract year,” CBS writes. “His departure would also save Washington an immediate $11.5M.”

CBS named the Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans as potential landing spots for Sweat.

Young’s health is the biggest question mark as it relates to a decision between him and Sweat. The former No. 2 overall pick has only played in 12 games over the last two seasons due to a torn ACL suffered on Nov. 14, 2021. In that span, he only has 1.5 sacks, three tackles for a loss and 31 total tackles.

The Commanders haven’t made a decision on Young’s fifth-year option and have until the deadline on May 1.

Sweat had eight sacks and a career-high 14 tackles for loss and 28 quarterback hits in 2022.

The No. 26 pick in the 2019 draft is playing on his fifth-year option for the 2023 season.
