Commanders QB Position 'Remains Unsolved'; Another Coming in NFL Draft?
Last year the Washington Commanders drafted based on what they knew they had on the team, not what they hoped to have.
A lack of consistent play from receivers outside of Terry McLaurin inspired the first-round NFL Draft selection of Jahan Dotson.
This year, Washington has a similar question in their quarterback room with solid potential, but not a lot of proven success.
Even veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been solid in spots throughout his career but has never led a team to a winning record as a starter.
And this has led NFL.com to consider the quarterback position the Commanders' burning question heading into the NFL Draft.
"The Commanders have thrown plenty of spaghetti at the quarterback wall in recent years, and while some stuck for a decent amount of time, none of those options are still around, save for single-game starter Sam Howell," writes NFL.com. "The second-year quarterback began 2023 as the penciled-in starter -- that is, until Brissett arrived with eraser in hand via free agency...It's a patchwork-level move for a position that needs a permanent repair."
NFL.com's burning question, "Is Jacoby Brissett good enough to keep Ron Rivera employed?" is a loaded one.
For starters, the team has maintained that Howell will get the first chance to win the top job.
Secondly, even if Brissett were to win the job despite that fact, there's nothing guaranteeing the team's new owners will resist the urge to clean house regardless of the season result.
In fact, there exists a possibility that anything short of a Super Bowl championship will cost Rivera his job.
Because of that, the Commanders' burning question is really impossible to answer at this point.
