Commanders Drafting QB? NFL Insider 'Wouldn't Rule it Out'

The Washington Commanders employ Sam Howell, but the team could be putting another rookie in the quarterback room this draft season.

The Washington Commanders are a week away from the NFL Draft and the team can still goin a bunch of different directions.

A route the Commanders could take is drafting a quarterback, which the team has done three times since 2016. Their most recent quarterback draftee, Sam Howell, appears to be atop the depth chart going into the draft, but NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport believes there is potential for that to change.

"What if the Commanders kinda go off the board a little bit and take a quarterback? They have visited with some. I wouldn't rule that out at all, so Sam Howell as the likely starter but we'll see what happens Thursday," NFL Network said.

Howell has a number of champions for him to start within the organization, including head coach Ron Rivera, but that hasn't stopped the Commanders from meeting with some quarterback prospects, including Tennessee signal-caller Hendon Hooker.

The reason for keeping an eye on quarterbacks is large in part due to Howell's miniscule sample size. He made his NFL debut in the final week of the season, but looked sharp in a 26-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys and flashed potential to be someone to build around moving forward.

But for many players, including Howell, the NFL stands for "Not For Long," and someone is always coming to challenge you for playing time.
