Commanders Coach Eric Bieniemy Will 'Show His Personality,' Says Chiefs' Andy Reid
INDIANAPOLIS -- There are some who don't think assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy should have come to the Washington Commanders.
But we know the man who hired him, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is happy with the move, and so too is Beineimy's former boss.
“I’m so happy for EB to have a chance to put his name on an offense," Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said to Herbie Teope of the Kansas City Star on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. "He’s working for Ron Rivera, who’s a dear friend, and he’s more of a defensive head coach than an offensive head coach, so just allows EB to do his thing and I’m happy for him."
One of the reasons some don't like Bieniemy's employment with the Commanders is the perception that the accomplished offensive coordinator is being discriminated against in past head coaching searches.
That discrimination, perceived or otherwise, is being hidden behind a veil of confusion surrounding just how much influence Beiniemy has had in the Chiefs' prolific offense over the past five years.
"Obviously, we tried to get him to become a head coach, but it didn’t work out that way," Reid continued. "But it’s not over yet, so I think he’s going to do a heck of a job here (Washington) and really be able to show his personality within the offense.”
And if Reid is right, then Bieniemy will not only help usher in a new era of Washington football behind young expected starting quarterback Sam Howell but potentially land himself a long-sought-after head coaching position.
A win for all involved if it comes to fruition.
