Commanders No. 1 On Offseason Wish List: Find Franchise QB
Times are changing in the nation's capital, and this time for the better as the Washington Commanders, under new ownership and coaching, will be looking to kickstart this offseason with a bang.
Part of that is deciding what to do with their prized No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft. Sam Howell looks to be a victim of last season as the Washington hierarchy will no doubt look to secure a top quarterback.
Just who that will be is up in the air.
But quarterback isn't the only position that the new Washington regime has to fine-tune as decisions on free agents also loom large.
"The question isn't whether Washington takes a quarterback with the second overall pick," ESPN writes. "More pointedly, will the Commanders make a push to move into the No. 1 spot for Caleb Williams? Either way, they are in a great spot to secure a franchise passer. Washington has several other needs, of course, including offensive line, pass-rusher and tight end, depending on what the team does with veteran Logan Thomas ($6.5 million in cap savings if released). A decision on whether to re-sign safety Kamren Curl will be among the most important free agency decisions for the franchise."
While what the franchise does with its coveted pick is no doubt headline news, the Commanders also have other needs.
The offensive line as ESPN stated needs improvement as Howell was a lamb to the slaughter at times last season as the unit allowed the second-most sacks in the NFL (65).
NFL Free Agency: Jacoby Brissett Among Best QBs?
General manager Adam Peters stated that the franchise will build through the draft and look to add free agents and with Kamren Curl set to be the big fish that Washington has to bring back, along with Kendall Fuller, Cody Barton, and Curtis Samuel, those decisions loom as just as important for Dan Quinn's team.
It will be a defining offseason for Washington as it looks to hit the ground running under Quinn, but while the quarterback decision looms as a "must get right," the Commanders still have plenty of others that will help shape the franchise going forward.
