Commanders Free Agency: Jaguars CB Shaquill Griffin Fit?

The Jacksonville Jaguars cut starting cornerback Shaquill Griffin last week. Could his next NFL home be with the Washington Commanders?
In this story:

The Washington Commanders will be addressing the cornerback position at some point this offseason.

That time could come as early as this week with free agency beginning, and the Commanders can begin to talk with outside free agents tomorrow at 12 p.m.

Someone that could be on their radar is Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who was cut by the team last week after just two seasons in Duval County.

Griffin, who turns 28 this summer, played in just five games for the Jaguars this past season after being limited due to injury.

However, before his injuries, he had CB1 potential, most of which he flashed towards the end of his tenure with the Seattle Seahawks from 2017-20. He signed a three-year, $44.5 million deal with the Jaguars just two years ago.

Should Griffin flock to the nation's capital, he wouldn't be expected to play a top role, but rather a complementary piece to Kendall Fuller and Benjamin St-Juste.

There is potential for the Commanders to plug-and-play a rookie in this year's draft, like Illinois' Devon Witherspoon or Oregon's Christian Gonzalez.

But by signing a cornerback in free agency, it gives the Commanders more flexibility with that first draft selection, where they could take an offensive tackle or tight end with the No. 16 pick.
