Commanders Free Agency: Washington Improves Offensive Line?

The offensive line is an area the Washington Commanders must address in the offseason.

If the Washington Commanders want to take the next step and make the playoffs next season, the offensive line is an area they desperately need to address.

Free agency is one route Washington can take to boost the trenches. In an article by Falcons Wire, they had the Commanders signing offensive tackle Kaleb McGary.

McGary, 28, was drafted in the first round by the Atlanta Falcons in 2019. Atlanta declined his fifth-year option before the 2022 season.

In 2022, McGary had the best season of his career. Pro Football Focus gave McGary an overall grade of 86.6. As a run blocker, PFF gave McGary a grade of 91.1, which was the second-best in the rankings. In pass protection, he received a 66.9. McGary allowed six sacks and was called for a penalty five times in 2022.

“You could make the argument that Washington needs four new starters in 2023,” Falcons Wire wrote. “In signing McGary, who had a strong season with the Falcons in 2022, you have a good run-blocking right tackle, which is a priority for the Commanders. Signing McGary allows Washington to move 2021 second-round pick Sam Cosmi inside to right guard, which many believe is a better spot for him.”

McGary would provide a huge boost to an offensive line that allowed 48 sacks, which was the seventh most in the NFL. His ability to run block would also improve a rushing game that was 12th in the NFL with 2,143 yards.

Regardless of who is playing quarterback, an offensive lineman of McGary’s caliber would go a long way toward improving Washington’s inconsistent offense.
