Commanders' Josh Harris Hopes to 'Bring City Together' Like 'Super Bowl Redskins' Did
The Washington Commanders are looking towards the future after Josh Harris officially took over as team owner, relinquishing the title from Dan Snyder.
Harris and his partners purchased the franchise from Snyder for an NFL-record $6.05 billion.
Snyder's tenure as owner began in 1999, when the Redskins were one of the league's hottest franchises. Now, the organization is seen as one of sports' laughingstocks after years of scandal and ineptitude off the field coupled with lack of on-field success.
Even though they are putting their past behind them, Harris wants to incorporate some of the magic the franchise was able to build during his childhood.
"I grew up with Sonny Jurgensen, Billy Kilmer, Joe Theismann, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, Joe Gibbs, the hogs, Darrell Green, John Riggins, and the rest of these legends and three Super Bowl championships," Harris said. "The then-Redskins were the team that everyone wanted to be a part of, and it brought this city together."
As a native of Chevy Chase, Harris has an emotional connection to the Commanders, and whether he likes it or not, that will come into play when he makes decisions for the franchise. Some may not be the best choice, but if it can be channeled with the right energy, Harris can return the franchise back to its glory.
