Commanders Biggest Question Mark? 'Quarterback Position' Says Ron Rivera

The Washington Commanders' quarterback position is perhaps the most intriguing storyline of training camp. For Ron Rivera, there are still a lot of unknowns about the position.
In this story:

Entering training camp, most eyes will be on the quarterback position for the Washington Commanders. With Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett set to battle it out for the starting job, there is no telling who is in front of the other.

Howell, by the admission of head coach Ron Rivera, will get the first crack at winning the job during training camp, with Brissett sure to have his chances as well.

There are not many question marks surrounding the rest of the team as it is reasonably settled, but for Rivera, the biggest unknown is what is happening at the most important position in sports - quarterback.

“I think more than anything else it will start with the quarterback position," Rivera said. "That’s about as big a question as it gets. Has [QB] Sam [Howell] grown and developed enough to help us take the next step? Is [QB] Jacoby [Brissett] ready to go and compete and if he gets that chance, will he take us up to the next level? It’s a big broad question but it does start with that position which is the biggest thing.”

With Eric Bieniemy the new offensive coordinator, many believe Washington will be better on offense than it was under Scott Turner...but first, a starting quarterback must be penciled in.

Howell has shown in his only career start that he has a nice skillset in the 26-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18 of last season, while Brissett did his best to keep the Browns afloat in Deshaun Watson's absence, going 4-7 in 11 games.

Given Howell is the unknown commodity and younger, it makes sense for him to get the first crack at the starting job, but with a veteran like Brissett waiting in the wings, the quarterback battle is anything but a formality.

And Rivera knows it.
