Commanders LB Cole Holcomb Signs with Steelers in NFL Free Agency

Signaled by the signing of another linebacker, the Washington Commanders are losing a team captain in free agency to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In this story:

Linebacker Cole Holcomb was a team captain for the Washington Commanders last season and during training camp was one of the most anticipated players on the roster.

His style on the field, and off it with his signature mullet, attracted Commanders fans to him, and this time last year Holcomb was viewed as a potential building block for the team's future.

A foot injury cost the linebacker 10 games last year, and it turns out his nine-tackle performance in a win over the Green Bay Packers will go down as the last time Holcomb played for Washington.

"The Steelers agreed to terms with former Commanders LB Cole Holcomb earlier this week," reported NFL.com's Tom Pelissero on Wednesday morning. "Three-year deal pending physical, per source."

Holcomb was selected by Washington in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft and up to now spent the entirety of his four-year career with the team.

In those four seasons, he played in 50 of a possible 66 games racking up 388 tackles, 15 for loss, and 4.5 sacks.

Earlier this week the Commanders agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Cody Barton in a move that many considered a sign Holcomb would not return.

With Wednesday's news that consideration is now fact, and a change at linebacker is coming for Washington in the new season.
