Last Four Games 'A Little Bit of a Test' of Washington Commanders' Mental Toughness
The Washington Commanders have four games to try and salvage their season as they sit at 4-9 with the Los Angeles Rams coming into view.
Currently riding the low of a four-game losing streak that has seen any hope of optimism go down the drain, perhaps the bye came at the right time. But now, as the Rams are in resurgent form, they present a tough challenge for Washington.
But as the Commanders begin the final stretch of the season, with not much to play for but pride, head coach Ron Rivera says that it will be a test of his players' mental toughness with nothing on the line.
“Yeah, to a degree, it is most certainly, that's what it's all about,” Rivera said. “I mean, it really is a little bit of a test. It has to be a one-game mentality, it has to be about coming in and being a professional and doing what a professional does. That’s is come to work, work hard, develop, and then get out there and give your best.”
With the Rams coming off a tough 37-31 overtime loss to Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, Sean McVay's team will want retribution on Sunday. Los Angeles was on a three-game winning streak prior to their loss, so they are in good form and will look to bounce back against Washington.
As the Commanders have nothing to play for but pride at SoFi Stadium, what does Rivera want to see from his playing group?
"You'd love to see our guys come out and really just play to their abilities, do the things that they're capable of," Rivera said. "I think this is a very good challenge for us just because it is a team that is fighting for their playoff life. The big thing that we have to do is just go out and play our game.”
Commanders vs. Rams Shines Light on Coaching Staff Discrepancies
With the Commanders looking to play the role of party pooper as that's all they can do for the final four games, Rivera wants to see how his players respond when there's nothing to play for.
While the playoff chase is all but over, Washington has a chance to try and get something out of this disappointing season - starting with denting the Rams' faint playoff hopes.
