Chiefs Ex Coach Eric Bieniemy 'Energetic' in Commanders Draft Process
New Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was on the coaching staff for the Kansas City Chiefs when they made franchise-altering draft picks such as Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Patrick Mahomes.
So it's not surprising that Ron Rivera says that Bieniemy has added a lively presence to the war room as Washington has plotted out its NFL Draft strategy.
“It's been very interesting, very energetic," Rivera said. "I mean the dude is constantly on the go. I love his responses to the readings. I love his comments. His insight is very good. We've all really pretty much have learned very quickly what he's looking for, for what we want to do offensively and how he sees players fitting."
It's unclear what Sam Howell will be if he indeed earns the opportunity to start at quarterback for the entirety of the 2023 season. But Bieniemy has inherited quite a bit of skill-position talent such as Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel, Logan Thomas, Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson.
Should the Commanders add another talented offensive player early in the draft -- whether it's a piece to bolster the offensive line or another pass catcher -- it would go a long way in helping them to compete in a crowded NFC East. And perhaps that would finally lead to Bieniemy getting a chance to be an NFL head coach.
