BREAKING: Commanders Hire Chiefs Coach Eric Bieniemy as Offensive Coordinator
The Washington Commanders made the move today that most expected all week long.
After waiting for the Kansas City Chiefs to win a second Super Bowl title with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, the Commanders are expected to finalize a deal with him on Saturday, according to NFL Network.
You read that right, a two-time Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator isn't getting a head coaching job, but another one in the same position.
Why?
Charges of racism are among the theories. So is this: Because Bieniemy's amount of play-calling and control of the Chiefs' prolific offense takes a backseat to that of head coach Andy Reid.
The perception that Bieniemy's role on the Kansas City offense is dwarfed by Reid's own is what some believe has held the coordinator back.
But that's a problem he won't have in Washington.
Commanders coach Ron Rivera recently went on the record regarding Bieniemy's struggles to secure a top position.
"It took me eight interviews before I got my opportunity," Rivera told Michael Phillips of The Richmond Times-Dispatch. "I don't think Eric deserved to have to go through that."
When it became official that Bieniemy was breaking away from the Chiefs this offseason, it was clearly in part in order to find a role that would extinguish the narrative surrounding his lack of offensive influence.
Betting on Bieniemy's talents, Washington is hoping to benefit from the knowledge that helped spark five top 10 scoring offenses and the NFL's top unit in two of his five years as Kansas City's coordinator.
This hire will help Bieniemy answer some questions about himself and potentially lead to a head coaching job in the near future.
But it also opens up a significant question for the Commanders.
Mainly, how does Bieniemy's history with an offense that throws the ball more than 60 percent of the time fit with Rivera's image of a unit in Washington that runs the ball twice for every pass? Washington fans might take this hire as a sign that Rivera is willing to add some creativity to the attack - and Bieniemy unquestionably has experience in that department.
